This month, and indeed throughout 2024, we have no outer planetary alignments which create the big shifts and changes such as we’ve experienced over the past decade. Without the bigger planetary cycles, the faster planetary cycles can have more of an impact. However, we cannot forget that Pluto, the smallest but most potent planetary force in modern astrology, moves back and forth from Capricorn to Aquarius throughout the year. This dramatic cycle of evolution is the major astrological force at work all year, removing the remnants of that which has ended and rebuilding something completely new in its place.
CAPRICORN NEW MOON. Typically a New Moon will feel like an infusion of new planetary energies as the Sun and Moon come together in a marriage that sets off a new lunar cycle, but since we are already well into Capricorn season this New Moon will be more of a burst of Capricornian goals and busyness.
The chart for the New Moon has a very tight square (90°) aspect to the lunar nodes of fate, suggesting that there could be a roadblock and a consequent course correction. Eclipses occur when the lunar nodes conjoin the New or Full Moon, and the square aspect can have a similar effect in terms of requiring a change of direction but we may not always recognize it at the time. This is a good time to pay attention to small twists of fate that may hold clues to a larger change that occurs sometime in the future, such as a chance meeting or conversation. A harmonious Neptune aspect can facilitate intuition and inner guidance if we listen closely to that quiet voice within, and a harmonious Mars influence will inspire confidence and support us in our goals and intentions.
MERCURY ENTERS CAPRICORN. Mercury has already been in Capricorn but dipped back into Sagittarius during its retrograde travels. It will re-enter Capricorn on January 13th, shifting the focus from Sagittarian faith and fun intoto Capricornian practicality. When Mercury is in Capricorn we are less inclined to take things at face value and need to investigate all angles of a situation.

Monday January 8. We begin the week with the Moon in Sagittarius for one last fling of hopeful optimism before we get serious under the Capricorn Moon beginning Tuesday evening. There could be some irrational wishful thinking on Monday since Neptune gets involved with Mercury, and this will filter into Tuesday morning as well. But the lunar aspects are favorable which will help us to maintain an emotional balance. (Moon conjunct Venus 1:44 pm, trine Chiron 7:44 pm, Mercury square Neptune 8:24 pm.)
Tuesday January 9. On Tuesday the Sun shines through the Neptunian fog to bring a fresh perspective and clear up any misconceptions. Mars gets support from Saturn to help us create solid strategies and a good foundation from which to pursue our loftiest goals, especially once the Moon enters Capricorn. This is a good day to think outside of the box and try something new. Wednesday January 10. The twist of fate inspired by the lunar nodes at the New Moon, begins today as the Sun forms that alignment to the nodes and the energies of Thursday’s New Moon begin to take shape. This is a good time to begin paying attention to any small events that could have a larger influence in our ultimate destiny.
Lunar influences are primarily supportive, and emotional harmony will prevail most of the day, but there could be a few hours in the evening when emotional triggers are activated. This may be uncomfortable but can also be an opportunity to release old patterns that keep us stuck. Thursday January 11. The Capricorn New Moon (see intro for the details) has one day to blossom before the Moon slips into Aquarius later in the day. A harmonious Mars aspect which culminates on Friday will build throughout the day on Thursday, invigorating positivity and radiating confidence.
Later in the evening the Moon aligns briefly with Pluto before making the shift into Aquarius. This could signify a burst of emotional intensity which awakens something genuine and reveals an aspect of ourselves that we may never have considered. Friday January 12. The lessons of the New Moon continue to bear fruit on Friday as the Aquarian influence helps us to step outside of our own story so that we can see with greater detachment. New ideas permeate our consciousness and offer innovative ways to approach our lives. Mars offers a boost of positive energy which lasts for a day or two, helping to inspire and motivate action. Saturday January 13. This is the perfect day for brainstorming or any kind of creative process that requires coming up with fresh perspectives. The Aquarius Moon pushes the boundaries of that which is expected, and then in the evening when Mercury (mind) enters Capricorn (accomplishment) we can put all of that inspiration to work.
Shortly thereafter the Moon enters Pisces to enhance imagination and creativity with the power of spiritual insight and a bit of magic. (Moon sextile Venus 2:31 am, square Uranus 4:58 am, Mercury enters Capricorn 9:49 pm, Moon enters Pisces 10:29 pm, Moon sextile Mercury 10:32 pm.)
Sunday January 14. The Pisces Moon inspires and motivates a day of beauty and inspiration today. Watch for a significant encounter which may change the course of fate. The fairy dust will continue to permeate our experience into Monday with some aspects of the Sun and Moon to Neptune, so enjoy this time of mystical guidance!
